Five Things that Encourage Preteens and Teens to Have SEX

With the popularity of the movie Juno, parents are expressing concern about teens engaging in premature sex.   Below are the five influences in preteens and teen life that encourage them to engage in sexual activities.

1.      Hormones – puberty happens to everyone.  During this time the sex hormones of testosterone in preteen boys and estrogen in preteen girls are released causing intense sexual feelings which results in a natural curiosity about the opposite sex.

2.      Media Messages – Film, television and music portray the message that sex outside of marriage is natural, normal, fun, exciting and has no consequences.

3.      Peer Pressure – Many boys believe that having sex is a rite of passage in becoming a man.  There is a heighten sexual awareness among girls they are becoming more sexually aggressive then ever and see sex as apart of becoming a woman.

4.      Alcohol - This drug works as a depressant.  It suppresses a teen’s normal inhibitions resulting in a lapse in judgment.

5.      Relationship Pressures – Our society tells them that sex is a normal part of a meaningful relationship.

However, the greatest influence in a preteen or teen’s life is YOU!!!   Consider the results of a teen study conducted for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  The purpose of the study was to find out who has the great influences in teens’ decision concerning sex and relationships.
