Parents Who Love & Support Abstinence

Parents Who Love & Support Abstinence

Darrell and Jewell Green founded The Darrell Green Youth Foundation because of their passion to see children all across the United States develop and grow into successful adults. In 1988, they set out to tackle the giants of illiteracy, poverty, fatherlessness and most importantly hopelessness. They developed values-driven learning centers that are operating in neighborhoods throughout America. You, football fans, may recognize the now retired Darrell Green from his 20 consecutive years with the Washington Redskins. Darrell was a leader in two Super Bowl Championships. He was named the World’s Fastest Athlete in 1991 and has been the winner of the NFL’s “Fastest Man” competition four times during his career. He is also a seven-time All-Pro defensive back and a sure bet for the NFL Hall of Fame.

Darrell and his wife have been parenting for 18 years. “We have given our time, energy and resources in preparing our three children for whatever may come their way. We have never forced nor begged our children to be abstinent. They have watched our lives and we have taught them through our example as best we could our values, which have enabled them to make very good choices. The whole process has forged character in all of us, but we look at them now and marvel. We are very proud of the way they have matured. Abstinence is a choice that requires hard work, but everyone who aspires to greatness will tell you its worth the wait.”

Hope Lopez with Ugandan First Lady

In recognition of their successful fight against the HIV/AIDS scourge, President Yoweri Museveni and his wife, Janet, have been given the Hero Award 2004 by the United States Medical Institute for Sexual Health (MISH). The First Lady received the award at the institute’s 2004 national meeting (June 17-19) at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. Mrs. Museveni told the conference that Uganda registered success in the war against the epidemic due to the openness policy backed by the country’s leadership, reducing the spread of the disease from over 30% in the 1980s to the current 6%, a State House statement said. Mrs Museveni said massive sensitive programmes spearheaded by President Museveni, aimed at targeting the vulnerable youth to practice abstinence from sex and faithfulness in marriage, further reduced the AIDS carnage. She said the initiatives instituted in Uganda were realistic for other countries, including the United States that face HIV/AIDS, STD (sexually transmitted diseases) or high non-marital pregnancies. As a result of their national call for sexual abstinence for unmarried individuals and faithfulness within marriage, 95% of Ugandans in the year 2000 had either zero or only one sexual partner. Primarily because of this, HIV rates have declined by two-thirds in Uganda over the last decade and a half.
